WORLD WETLANDS DAY

,2013 3pm-6pm Kamballur and Cherupuzha
50 Students of the NSS UNIT of GHSS Kamballur visited the
wetlands in Ambechal,KAMBALLUR.The ward
member Sulochana K and Sajeevan.P Kamballur spoke to the volunteers about the need for
protecting wetlands and biodiversity.Earlier a rally ,flagged off by Mathew
K.D ,the Principal was conducted in the Kamballur town.The students took a
pledge that they will protect the biodiversity of kamballur and that they will
always try to protect the waterbodies clean and not polluted.Ratnakaran,the reporter
of the local network channel was also
present.
Volunteers then conducted a rally against the polution of
rivers in the nearby town Cherupuzha,a town upstream of the river Thejaswini ,8
km way from the village.There have been reports about drainage canals opened
straight to the river from a bar and a hotel which have recently started functioning
in the town.
The placards carried messages like STOP POLLUTING THEJASWINI;WE
WANT A PROPER WASTE MANAGEMENT SYSTEM IN CHERUPUZHA,INSTALL SEWAGE TREATMENT
PLANTS IN CHERUPUZHA.The slogans like SEWAGE CHANNELS TO THE RIVER;IT IS A SHAME
TO CHERUPUZHA,RIVERS ARE OUR SISTERS;THE EARTH IS OUR MOTHER;IT I S OUR DUTY TO
TAKE CARE OF THEM.,BROTHERS;DO NOT MAKE SEWAGE WATER FLOW INTO THEJASWINI,IT IS
THE WATER TO DRINK,THE ELIXIR OF LIFE PEOPLE LIVING FOR DOWNSTREAM made people stand and listen.

volunteers from the NSS UNIT and 5 from the other school clubs participated in
the rally.Subhash Master and Radhakrishnan C .K ,teachers of GHSS KAMBALLUR
escorted the rally.The programme ended with a meeting on the riverside where
the sewage channel is cut open into the river.

Kunhi.P,Pavithran.N of the paristhithi samrakahna samithi in Cherupuzha;Sajeevan.P,the
chairman of the school management committee ,C P Balakrishan Kamballur, spoke
on the occasion.the speakers wanted a drainage processing system in the town
and declared that all the steps to pollute the river would be defended by people.
A pledge to protect the rivers and wetlands was also taken by the people gathered.
The event has got extensive coverage in the media chiefly due to the gravity of pollution in
river Thejaswini which has already dwindled down to shallow stream and the
presence of teenagers in the rally in the town in a busy afternoon.
