AS part of a project on biodiversity by the NSS unit,33 higher secondary students of this school selected to study biodiversity went on a field trip to the nearby Akkokavu ( Sacred Grove) under the guidance of two asst professors BIJU.P from Govt.college,Kasargod and JOSEKUTTY.E.J from Govt.Brennen college,Thalassery.The local expert Sajeevan Kamballur and the LSG Chairman Janardanan escorted the team.Principal Mathew K.D.;Kishore Master;Baiju,K P and programme officer Radhakrishnan C.K were also present.
The students have collected data from the school campus and the near by grove so as to prepare a BIODIVERSITY REGISTER.of KAMBALLUR.The work lasted for more than 5 hours from 9AM- 2.30.PM on Saturday; 6/10/2012.The students were divided into 3 sections so as to focus on three important areas of the study,namely-thannerthadangal(water bodies);flaura and fauna;herbs,butterflies and other moths & birds.
The students have identified more than 150 species of plants and trees in the school campus and the kavu.;136 kinds of herbs;varieties of butterflies and moths.A few of them are found endemic.
Biju master pointed out that the ancient kavu should be protected as it contains valuable herbs like ATLANTIA MONOPHYLLA(kattunarakam) and orchid
plants. Anti social elements have been throwing waste in the kavu recently.CLEANING THE KAVU MUST BE THE NEXT STEP.

PLANT DESCRIPTION
A large thorny shrub grows up to 2.5 meters in height. Leaves simple, alternate, oblong, alternate, entire or crenulate. Flowers small seen in axillary racemes. Fruits small, round berries contain small seeds.
MEDICINAL PROPERTIES
Plant pacifies vitiated kapha, vata, flatulance, colic, hemiplegia, arthritis, skin diseases, bacterial infections and malignancy.
Useful part : Bark, Leaves.
CHEMICAL CONTENTS
The rootbark yields alkaloids, atalaphylline and its N-methyl derivatives and atalaphyllidine, which have close structural similarities with the antitumour alkaloid, acronycine, and its cogeners. The rootbark also contains the limonoid, atalantin. The leaf juice forms an ingredient of a compound liniment used in hemiplegia. The essential oil is used in paralysis. The oil contains higher terpene esters belonging to azulene group (29%). (Azulenes impart anti-inflammatory activity.)
