.REPORT
LET US LIVE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE50 nss voluteers and their programme officer Radhakrishnan C. K under the guidance of K.P. ACHUTHAN MASTER ,SAJEEVAN VAIDYAR and SHIKHIN T V went on a study trip to Akachery Vanam(RESERVE FOREST,BEDOOR ) in the
afternoon of 27/10/2012. 15 members of the NALLAPADHAM CLUB and the coordinator Baiju.K.P,also joined them. This was the second phase of the biodiversity project conducted by the NSS UNIT in collaboration with the Central Ministry of Environmental Affairs,Delhi.During the visit, the forest was found contaminated by plastics, pieces of glass ,bottles and waste materials thrown away by the unauthorised visitors who use the place as an open bar.The volunteers removed all the waste materials in a selected
area of about 50m x 50 m inside the forest .There were about 3 sacks of waste materials .Glass bottles had been deliberately thrown into the rocky floor and got broken into tiny pieces by the boozers. It was very difficult for the volunteers to remove the small pieces of glass seen every where in the forest.Sacks of waste deposited by catering agencies was another alarming issue.Representatives of the local people SHIKHIN T V,SAJEEVANKAMBALLUR were also present. After the cleaning,a meeting was conducted on the spot to discuss the issue of pollution and destruction in the forest.Student representatives like Arjun,Anand,Mubeena,Zuwaiba,Riya and Elizabeth strongly condemned the habit of throwing away into the forest.Sajeevan Kamballur;K P Achuthan Master,Shikhin.T.V ,Baiju.K.P and Radhakrishnan C.K spoke for the protection of the forest and a close monitoring of the visitors ..An awareness campaign to control the unnecessary interventions in the forest is the next step as planned in the meeting.Volunteers presented songs paying respect to Nature. The programme ended at about 3.30 PM.
The reserve forest which spreads to more than 900 acres mostly in West Eeri Panchayath of Parappa block in Kasaragod district is still a safe habitat for peacocks, deers, boars and monkeys ;and a wide variety of other flora and fauna. But there is poaching going on now and then according to local people here. The menace of dumping the forest with waste is another serious issue turned up in this study. The link road from Kamballur to Cheemeni-Odakolly road passes through the middle of the forest. There is no checkpost on any side of the forest. There is a beverage shop in the nearby town Cherupuzha and boozers come in bikes or autos to the forest frequently even at day time to enjoy themselves, breaking up bottles and leaving the waste inside the forest .
Moreover the waste materials after every feast in the local area are also reported to be carried to the heart of the forest and dumped in the place .The forest officials must be convinced about the gravity of the situation.
