31/10/2012 NATIONAL INTEGRATION DAY

What does National Integration mean?

National integration is the awareness of a common identity amongst the citizens of a country. It means that though we belong to different castes, religions and regions and speak different languages we recognize the fact that we are all one. This kind of integration is very important in the building of a strong and prosperous nation.

Unity in Diversity

Unity in our country does not mean the kind of oneness that comes from racial and cultural similarity. It is unity in spite of great differences, in other words, unity in diversity. An important historical event in which this unity was displayed was the freedom movement when all the Indians united against the British rule.

What is the common feature in all the religions?

India is a very large country. We have the second largest population in the world and our land area is about the same size as Europe minus the former Soviet Union. About one thousand six hundred fifty-two languages and dialects are spoken in our country. From among these eighteen have been given special recognition by our Constitution as National languages of our country.
A unique feature of our country is that all the major religions of the world are practiced here like Hinduism, Islam, Christianity, Buddhism, Sikhism, Jainism, and Zoroastrianism. There are also great varieties in costume, food habits, and social customs. Geographically our land is diverse and there are amazing differences in climate. Despite all these differences India is a political entity, every part of which is governed under the same Constitution. We have to co-exist with each other peacefully, respect the culture and religion of our fellow Indians.

.REPORT
LET US LIVE IN HARMONY WITH NATURE
50 nss voluteers and their programme officer Radhakrishnan C. K under the guidance of K.P. ACHUTHAN MASTER ,SAJEEVAN VAIDYAR and SHIKHIN T V went on a study trip to Akachery Vanam(RESERVE FOREST,BEDOOR ) in the
afternoon of 27/10/2012.   15 members of the NALLAPADHAM CLUB and the coordinator Baiju.K.P,also joined them. This was the second phase of the biodiversity project conducted by the NSS UNIT in collaboration with the Central Ministry of Environmental Affairs,Delhi.During the visit, the forest was found contaminated by plastics, pieces of glass ,bottles  and waste materials thrown away by the unauthorised visitors who use the place as an open bar.The volunteers removed all the waste materials in a selected
area of  about 50m x 50 m inside the forest .There were about 3 sacks of waste materials .Glass bottles had been deliberately thrown into the rocky floor and got broken into tiny pieces by the boozers. It was very difficult for the volunteers to remove the small pieces of glass seen every where in the forest.Sacks of waste deposited by catering agencies was another alarming issue.Representatives of the local people SHIKHIN T V,SAJEEVANKAMBALLUR were also present. After the cleaning,a meeting was conducted on the spot to discuss the issue of  pollution and destruction in the forest.Student representatives like Arjun,Anand,Mubeena,Zuwaiba,Riya and Elizabeth strongly condemned the habit of throwing away into the forest.Sajeevan Kamballur;K P Achuthan Master,Shikhin.T.V ,Baiju.K.P  and Radhakrishnan C.K spoke for the protection of the forest and a close monitoring of the visitors  ..An awareness campaign to control the unnecessary interventions in the forest is the next step as planned in the meeting.Volunteers presented songs paying respect to  Nature. The programme ended at about 3.30 PM.

The reserve forest which spreads to more than 900 acres mostly in West Eeri Panchayath of Parappa block in Kasaragod district is still a safe habitat for peacocks, deers, boars and monkeys ;and a wide variety of other flora and fauna. But there is poaching going on now and then according to local people here. The menace of dumping the forest with waste is another serious issue  turned up in this study. The link road from Kamballur to Cheemeni-Odakolly road  passes through the middle of the forest. There is no checkpost  on any side of the forest. There is a beverage shop in the nearby town Cherupuzha and boozers come in bikes or autos to the forest frequently even at day time to enjoy themselves,  breaking up bottles and leaving the waste inside the forest  .
Moreover the waste materials after every feast in the local area are also reported to be carried to the heart of the forest and dumped in the place .The forest officials must be convinced about the gravity of the situation.
